Custom software your team will still understand in five years.
“
Custom software is meant to fit you exactly. Too often it ends up fitting nothing but itself: a system so entangled that one small change breaks three other things and nobody can predict the consequences. Whoever built it left long ago. The tool that was meant to take work off your hands has become your most expensive problem.
This is rarely down to bad developers, and almost never down to missing documentation. It comes down to architecture, to decisions made in the first few weeks whose cost only shows up years later. That is where I start.
”
Half my work is what I don't build
Every extra library, every fashionable framework, every clever shortcut is a debt. It gets repaid later, usually by your team. Decisions like that never appear in a quote. You notice them later, when others would be rebuilding from scratch and you are simply carrying on.
How I work
I build with .NET Core and React, not because they are fashionable but because I have run these stacks in production for years and know where they break. Custom software is a black box for many clients: you pay and you hope. With me you can see where things stand at every point.
- Clarify the requirements.
Before a line of code exists, I work out what you actually need, not only what the spec says. Sometimes the first result is that we cut the project down.
- Set the architecture.
This is where it is decided whether the software is still maintainable in five years. I draw clear boundaries between the building blocks so later changes stay local.
- Build in short rounds.
You see working software early and get honest status reports, rather than one large surprise at the end. Anything that doesn't fit gets changed while it is still cheap.
- Test automatically.
Every change runs against tests that fire as soon as something breaks elsewhere, so errors don't reach your customers.
- Hand over properly.
You get readable, documented code and the knowledge that goes with it. Your team can carry on, including without me.
- Ship at the push of a button.
New versions go live through an automated process that is traceable and reversible. No risky manual deployment in the middle of the night.
If your project involves AI features, I plan the legal side in from the beginning. I hold an AI competence certification (AI Training Institute) and work in line with the EU AI Act, so that a smart feature doesn't turn into a compliance problem later.
The technical foundation
For anyone who wants to know exactly what I build custom software with:
- Applications
- Technologies
- Concepts
- Quality Standards
One point of contact, the right specialists
For smaller projects I work alone. When a project grows, I bring in exactly the senior freelancers who fit it: developers, architects and designers I know personally. Nobody learns at your expense, and I remain your point of contact throughout.
When this is worth it, and when it isn't
Custom software is not the right answer to everything. If a standard product covers your problem cleanly, I will tell you so, even though I earn nothing from that. It gets interesting when your processes are too specific for off-the-shelf software, when an existing system is running out of road, or when you are building something that has to last for years.
